Have you ever seen brown eyes in the sun? You don’t always notice it at first but you’ll see that ‘brown’ no longer describes them. They melt into golden rays, circling an eclipse. There’s nothing boring about brown eyes, not even when the later hours encroach; they just turn into a sunset of their own.
Hi! I'm an aspiring comic artist and even have a semi-popular web comic going on right now. But I'm trying to figure out whether I should continue it as a career. I love doing it, but I'm just not sure. Seeing as your a professional in this field, I was wondering do you plan on maintaining your work as an independent comic artist/author or do you have plans on getting a job at a comic book company? Why and why not? I'd really love to hear back when you get a chance! Thanks!
I hope you don’t mind me answering this publicly- it’s something I get asked a lot, and I think other people might benefit from it!
I personally don’t have plans to work at any companies or with publishers unless it’s on my own terms. I have 0 interest in spending time on working on anything I’m not invested in, or pandering to editors that want to make an easy, safe buck. I’m lucky enough to be able to do exactly what I want and earn money by doing it, so even though it can be difficult or stressful at times I wouldn’t have it any other way!
It’s a decision that has to be made constantly- every time a new opportunity arises, you can to choose to continue your own work or to drop it in favour of the new thing. And the circumstances will be different every time! Never lock yourself into any situation– don’t be afraid to say no, or yes, or to drop a project that isn’t panning out the way you thought it might. However, opportunities will only come up if you keep producing work, so never stop working so you can wait around to be discovered. I don’t actively seek out freelance work at all anymore– people come to me because they find my comic, which is extremely luxurious.
What you do depends largely on the reasons you’re not sure about going forward as an independent creator– is it financial concern? A lack of confidence in your work? Do you value the external validation and sense of community that can come from working with a company, or do you prefer to do your own thing? Do you have the personality to work on art you don’t care about? Do you have the strength of will to take risks? Do you need someone to give you a schedule, or can you meet your own deadlines? Do you have a job offer that you’re waffling over, or do you have nothing without your webcomic?
These are rhetorical questions from me, but they’re all things you should ask yourself– and don’t be afraid to be honest! There’s no right or wrong path to follow, especially with the comics scene being the way it is now!
